Balustrades and screens
- Glass: clear, modern and a good windbreak. Toughened glass in outdoor-grade fixings.
- Aluminium: slim, strong and almost maintenance-free, so ideal by the sea.
- Composite or hardwood: traditional spindles and handrail to suit the deck.
Any edge with a drop of more than 600mm needs guarding, and we build to the heights and strengths required by Building Regulations. A taller glass screen on the windward side of a low deck can make it far more comfortable.
Steps
We build steps wide and even in the same boards as the deck, with neat nosings and handrails where needed. A long, low step along the front edge doubles as seating.
Lighting
Low-voltage LED lights in step risers, deck boards and post caps. They make steps safe after dark and turn a deck into somewhere to sit on a summer evening. Cables run inside the frame during the build, and the lights work from a transformer on an outdoor socket; any new mains supply is fitted by a qualified electrician.
Common questions
Will glass balustrading cope with coastal wind?
Yes, when it's a system designed for outdoor use with toughened or laminated glass and proper fixings.
Are deck lights OK in salty air?
We use sealed LED lights rated for outdoor use. They're designed to cope with weather and damp.
